Spain

Spain is a heavy consumer of eggs — the ubiquity of the tortilla española alone attests to that — and it has historically paid less for them than most of western Europe, owing to a large, intensive and strongly export-oriented laying industry. The country consistently ranks among the EU's top egg producers and is a net exporter to its neighbours.

The mid-2020s tested that record of low prices. Avian influenza reached Spanish flocks in 2025, and the resulting European supply squeeze — with Germany and other importing countries bidding for scarce eggs — pushed Spanish prices up at one of the fastest rates in the EU during 2025–26. Eggs became a recurring subject in Spanish inflation coverage, a development that would have been almost unheard of a few years earlier.

Spain also trails its northern neighbours in the cage-free transition, with a larger share of hens still kept in enriched cages; that keeps baseline costs lower than in France, a gap visible in the comparison table on this page. The figure reflects prices observed daily at Mercadona, Spain's largest supermarket chain.
