Spain is a heavy consumer of eggs — the ubiquity of the tortilla española alone attests to that — and it has historically paid less for them than most of western Europe, owing to a large, intensive and strongly export-oriented laying industry. The country consistently ranks among the EU's top egg producers and is a net exporter to its neighbours.

The mid-2020s tested that record of low prices. Avian influenza reached Spanish flocks in 2025, and the resulting European supply squeeze — with Germany and other importing countries bidding for scarce eggs — pushed Spanish prices up at one of the fastest rates in the EU during 2025–26. Eggs became a recurring subject in Spanish inflation coverage, a development that would have been almost unheard of a few years earlier.

Spain also trails its northern neighbours in the cage-free transition, with a larger share of hens still kept in enriched cages; that keeps baseline costs lower than in France, a gap visible in the comparison table on this page. The figure reflects prices observed daily at Mercadona, Spain's largest supermarket chain.

This site has tracked Mercadona's shelf price since early July 2026, and it has held at about 2.79 euros per 10 eggs on every observation through late October 2026. Official benchmark series, published with a lag, show more movement: the FAO's food-price monitoring series for Spain eased from about 1.64 euros per 10 eggs in May 2026 to about 1.25 euros in August before recovering to about 1.44 euros in September, while Eurostat-based figures rose from about 2.16 euros in April 2025 to about 2.60 euros in December 2025. These series are broad market averages rather than one chain's standard pack, so the gaps between them and the Mercadona price reflect different measurements, not overpricing. Read together, they suggest that market-level prices have eased somewhat from their 2025 highs while Mercadona's shelf price has stayed put.

Feed is a further structural factor behind Spanish egg prices. Spain is one of the European Union's largest importers of feed grains and soybean meal, because its domestic cereal harvests, which swing widely with drought, fall well short of the needs of its large livestock sector. That ties the cost of producing eggs closely to world grain and oilseed markets as well as to rainfall at home, with dry years tending to raise feed bills. Production is also geographically concentrated, with Castilla-La Mancha generally ranked as the country's leading egg-producing region.
