France is the European Union's largest egg producer, and eggs are among the few staple foods in which the country is essentially self-sufficient. That scale did not shield it from the European avian-influenza waves of the mid-2020s, which repeatedly struck the dense poultry-farming regions of western France and pushed prices higher across the continent.

The larger structural factor is the transition to higher-welfare housing. Under EU rules and far-reaching retailer commitments, France has been phasing out cage systems: the share of hens in alternative housing — barn, free-range and organic — has risen above three-quarters, and most supermarket chains no longer sell cage eggs under their own brands at all. Free-range and Label Rouge eggs now dominate store shelves, and they are structurally more expensive to produce than the cage eggs they replaced.

That is the principal reason French retail prices sit above those of southern-European neighbours such as Spain and Portugal in this index. The figure reflects prices observed daily at Carrefour France, using the per-egg unit price displayed on the shelf to avoid distortions from differing pack sizes, and it has tracked closely with Eurostat's official French average.

This site began recording Carrefour France shelf prices on 25 June 2026. Measured per ten eggs, the Carrefour price started at €3.00, eased to a monthly median of about €2.75 in August and €2.70 in September, then recovered to about €2.85 in October 2026, staying within a range of €2.60 to €3.00 over the period. The official series available here are lagged and run on a different basis: the FAO's FPMA monitoring figure for France moved between roughly €1.53 and €1.76 per ten eggs from May to September 2026, while Eurostat's latest observations put the national average at about €2.46 in April 2025 and €2.78 in December 2025. A single retailer's shelf price and a national average compiled on its own methodology measure different things, so the gap between them reflects that difference rather than any markup.

French shelf prices are also shaped by the way supermarkets buy. Supplier prices for most grocery products are set in annual commercial negotiations between producers and a small number of large retail groups and purchasing alliances, and the EGalim laws adopted from 2018 onward require contracts to take farm production costs into account. Because feed is by far the largest cost in egg production, this framework ties retail prices, with a delay, to the cost of grain and soy. In practice it tends to make egg prices adjust in steps rather than continuously, which is broadly consistent with the gradual movements recorded on this page.
