Portugal's egg market moves largely in step with Spain's: the two Iberian markets are deeply integrated, and Portuguese prices generally track Spanish ones, with a small premium or discount depending on the season. When the European avian-influenza supply squeeze of 2025–26 lifted Spanish prices, Portuguese shelves followed within weeks.

Portugal's significance in this index lies in affordability rather than the listed price. Portuguese wages are among the lowest in western Europe — the statutory minimum wage is paid in fourteen annual instalments, a distinctive local arrangement — so a euro price that appears moderate next to France's weighs more heavily on a Lisbon household's shopping basket. The purchasing-power widget on this page captures precisely that gap.

Domestically, production is concentrated in the centre and north of the country and covers most national consumption, with trade flows to and from Spain balancing the remainder. The figure reflects prices observed daily at Continente, Portugal's largest supermarket chain.

Our daily tracking at Continente began in early July 2026, and the shelf price has been notably steady since. The monthly median held at about €2.74 per 10 eggs from July through September 2026 and stood at roughly the same level in October, with individual daily readings ranging between about €2.66 and €3.11. Official benchmarks sit lower: FAO food-price monitoring data put Portugal's egg price at about €1.69 per 10 in May 2026, easing to around €1.52 by August and September, while Eurostat-based figures rose from about €2.10 in April 2025 to €2.61 in December 2025. Those series average across many outlets and formats, whereas the Continente figure is one chain's listed price for a particular pack, so the gap reflects different measurements rather than overcharging.

Retail structure also shapes what Portuguese shoppers pay. Grocery sales are concentrated in two domestic groups — Sonae's Continente and Jerónimo Martins' Pingo Doce — alongside the German discounters Lidl and Aldi and, since 2019, Spain's Mercadona, which has been expanding from the north of the country. Private-label eggs from these chains compete closely on price, while free-range and organic lines sell at a clear premium. As elsewhere in the European Union, conventional battery cages have been banned since 2012, so the cheapest cartons generally come from enriched-cage or barn systems.
