Singapore imports over ninety percent of its food, and for years most of its eggs crossed the causeway from Malaysia. That comfortable arrangement was shaken in 2022, when Malaysia briefly banned chicken exports during a domestic shortage. The ban covered chicken rather than eggs, but the scare reshaped Singapore's thinking on food security almost overnight.

The response has been deliberate diversification. Accredited egg sources now span from Thailand and Indonesia to Poland and Australia; a handful of high-technology local farms are being expanded under the city-state's "30 by 30" goal of producing thirty percent of its nutritional needs locally by 2030; and eggs stand alongside leafy greens and fish as one of the three priority items in that strategy.

That resilience carries a cost, and Singaporean egg prices sit above most of Southeast Asia's.
