Singapore imports over ninety percent of its food, and for years most of its eggs crossed the causeway from Malaysia. That comfortable arrangement was shaken in 2022, when Malaysia briefly banned chicken exports during a domestic shortage. The ban covered chicken rather than eggs, but the scare reshaped Singapore's thinking on food security almost overnight.

The response has been deliberate diversification. Accredited egg sources now span from Thailand and Indonesia to Poland and Australia; a handful of high-technology local farms are being expanded under the city-state's "30 by 30" goal of producing thirty percent of its nutritional needs locally by 2030; and eggs stand alongside leafy greens and fish as one of the three priority items in that strategy.

That resilience carries a cost, and Singaporean egg prices sit above most of Southeast Asia's. Singapore has no universal minimum wage — sectoral Progressive Wages apply instead — so the purchasing-power widget is not displayed on this page. The figure shown here reflects prices observed daily at FairPrice, the NTUC-linked chain that anchors Singapore's grocery market.

Our daily tracking at FairPrice began in mid-June 2026, and the observed price has drifted lower since. The monthly median fell from about S$3.96 per 10 eggs in June 2026 to S$3.78 in July and August, and to S$3.59 in September and October. Individual daily readings ranged between roughly S$3.46 and S$4.55 over the period, and the latest reading, as of late October 2026, stood at S$3.50. Because the series comes from a single chain and the site does not yet carry an official Singapore benchmark, these figures describe one large retailer's shelf rather than a national average.

How eggs reach the shelf is also tightly managed. Every overseas farm that supplies Singapore must be accredited by the Singapore Food Agency, and consignments are subject to inspection and sampling on arrival, which adds cost but has helped keep confidence in imported eggs high. Demand, meanwhile, is unusually broad for a small market: eggs are woven into everyday hawker-centre and coffee-shop food — from soft-boiled eggs with kaya toast to fried noodle dishes — so food-service buying sits alongside household purchases. That steady, culturally rooted demand means supply disruptions tend to show up quickly on supermarket shelves.
