Why eggs cost this in Hong Kong
Hong Kong produces almost none of its own food, and eggs are no exception: virtually every egg sold in the territory arrives by truck, ship or aircraft. Mainland China supplies the everyday baseline, while Japan, Thailand, the United States and Europe serve the premium and specialty segments — a mix that makes Hong Kong's egg supply one of the most internationally diverse of any market.
That dependence on imports means Hong Kong prices reflect other countries' crises after a short lag. When bird-flu culls in Japan tightened supply, and when U.S. prices surged in 2025, Hong Kong wholesalers registered the effects in their order books within weeks, and consumers saw them at retail soon afterward.
The territory does, however, offer unusually strong price transparency: the Consumer Council's Online Price Watch tracks supermarket prices across the city daily, and this page draws directly on that public dataset. The purchasing-power widget uses the statutory minimum wage of HK$42.10 an hour (2025).
