Nigeria maintains one of Africa's largest poultry industries, yet eggs continue to drift beyond the reach of the households that need them most. The cause is a cost structure under severe internal strain: feed — maize and soybeans — accounts for the great majority of production costs, and both crops have been battered by insecurity in growing regions, currency devaluation and import restrictions.

The naira's steep depreciation since 2023 inflicted a double blow, inflating the price of imported inputs (vaccines, additives, equipment) while eroding consumers' real purchasing power. Farmers caught between unaffordable feed bills and price points consumers cannot bear have culled flocks or exited the industry entirely, tightening supply further — a spiral about which Nigerian poultry associations have warned loudly and repeatedly.
