No country in the world consumes more eggs per person than Mexico — on the order of an egg a day for every resident. The egg is not merely a breakfast option there; it is a staple at the center of the national diet, which makes egg inflation politically sensitive to a degree few other countries experience.

Mexico learned this early. The 2012 H7N3 avian-influenza outbreak in Jalisco — the country's principal laying region — killed or forced the culling of tens of millions of birds and produced the original "egg crisis," prompting government intervention and emergency imports. The episode continues to shape how quickly Mexican authorities respond to poultry disease today.

Production is concentrated and industrial, dominated by Jalisco and Puebla, and proximity to U.S. grain keeps feed costs comparatively manageable. In 2025 Mexico was also among the countries shipping eggs north during the U.S. shortage. The figure shown here now comes from Chedraui, one of the country's major supermarket chains, which replaced Walmart México as the tracked retailer in late October 2026; the purchasing-power widget uses the general-zone daily minimum wage converted to an hourly rate.

This site's observations for Mexico come from Walmart México and ran from mid-June to late August 2026, after which the retailer's website stopped being reachable for collection. Over that window, the median price for 10 eggs was about MX$40 in both June and July and eased to roughly MX$34 in August, with the last recorded price at MX$35 and the lowest at about MX$32. A few far pricier listings, up to about MX$120 for 10 eggs, also appeared — most likely specialty or premium products rather than a shift in the standard price, since the monthly medians barely moved. Tracking resumed at Chedraui in late October 2026, where standard white and red eggs from mainstream brands worked out to about MX$24 per 10 at the first reading. Because the two chains' series cover different products and periods, the difference in level should not be read as a fall in Mexican egg prices.

Mexico's retail landscape adds another layer. Although supermarkets such as Walmart sell eggs in cartons, a large share of the country's eggs has traditionally been bought loose, by the kilogram, at neighborhood corner shops, public markets and street markets known as tianguis, and official price monitoring in Mexico commonly quotes eggs per kilogram rather than per dozen. Prices in those channels can differ from supermarket cartons in either direction, depending on the region and the quantity bought. The supermarket figure shown here is therefore one consistent reference point, not a full picture of what every Mexican household pays.
