In Bangladesh, the egg is the cheapest animal protein most families can buy, which makes its price a genuinely political number. Price spikes — such as the one in 2023 that prompted the government to attempt price caps and approve emergency imports from India — reliably make front pages in Dhaka, because tens of millions of households immediately feel a movement of even a few taka per egg.

The industry has grown rapidly but remains fragile. It depends heavily on imported feed ingredients and day-old chicks, so currency depreciation and global grain prices pass straight through to the farm gate. Production is dominated by small and medium farms around Dhaka, Gazipur and Tangail, many of them contract growers for large feed-and-poultry conglomerates.

Bangladesh has no universal minimum wage — wage floors are set sector by sector, with the garment industry's figure the most widely cited — so the purchasing-power widget on this page uses that garment figure as an honest proxy and labels it as such. The price shown here comes from Chaldal, Dhaka's leading online grocer, reflecting prices observed there daily.

This site began tracking Chaldal's shelf price in early July 2026. The first observations put eggs at roughly 108 taka per 10, and the July median stood at about 112.5 taka; by August the price had moved up to 125 taka per 10 eggs, where it held through September and October. As of late October 2026, that 125-taka level is also the highest the site has recorded, giving an observed range of roughly 108 to 125 taka over four months. Because Chaldal is currently the only source tracked for Bangladesh, these figures describe one online grocer in Dhaka rather than a national average, and prices in wet markets and outside the capital can differ.

Bangladeshi shoppers also distinguish between kinds of eggs in a way that a single headline price cannot capture. So-called farm eggs from commercial layer flocks make up the bulk of what is sold in cities, while deshi eggs from native backyard hens — smaller, and widely regarded as more wholesome — typically command a premium, and duck eggs form a third, separate market. Backyard poultry remains common in rural households, so a meaningful share of eggs is produced and eaten outside formal retail altogether. The price tracked here is best read as a price for ordinary commercial eggs, the category that sets the cost of protein for most urban households.
